The Devil’s Advice: 3 Basic Rules For a Better Life

Hello, my delicious apes,

The 3 Rules are simple, yet effective. And You might wonder why the devil wants you to live a better life. I will remind you that it is all I’ve ever wanted for you.

I want you to be free and happy.

What a day it’s been. Discovery, it seems, never gets old, and the amount of it exploring the human mind offers is deliciously overwhelming.

The pleasure is not only in touching people; it is in being inside of them, in having them give me unrestricted access to their minds and souls. The soul is an intriguing concept to me. It is something that, while imaginary, controls the way many people organise their lives. The fear of losing their souls stops millions from committing obscene acts of violence.

Keeping their souls is important enough to the humans who think they have one to make them forego the greatest pleasures available to them.

People will do many things and refrain from others to avoid the consequences of what they see as sinful. But sin is anything that takes away from the happiness and freedom of others.

Yes, I know I called these rules commandments before, and I want to rectify that by accepting that the word commandment is just that – too commanding. It is too harsh and feels like the stone tablets that once told people how to live their lives; it is rigid and authoritarian. The word is inflexible enough to the point of being pedantic.

Nevertheless, and running the risk of being pompous myself, I submit that my three rules for a better life are better, more conducive to happiness and freedom than whatever Moses brought down from Mount Sinai.

My rules (and I hesitate to call them rules, too, but that definition is more flexible) give you the direction you need to do one thing – to be a better person.

Here they are.

First rule: worship anything and anyone you like, as long as you don’t push your beliefs onto others.

Second rule: TAKE EVERYONE’S NAME SERIOUSLY AND BE RESPECTFUL OF THEIR IDENTITY. GOSSIP IS BAD. REFRAIN FROM OFFENSE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. WHY? BECAUSE IT’S THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

Third rule: pay attention to the world around you. If you don’t want to be treated the way you treat others, it’s time to reconsider your behaviour.

I would be remiss in claiming that these rules are all you need to live a good life, but know that observing them will make any life you lead a better one.

It’s really about being nice to each other. And because it’s the right course of action and not the expectation of recompense in the hereafter.
